The volunteers for Peak Potential's adaptive rock climbing program have to wear many hats. They all have day jobs to pay the bills. But, after work, they rush over to the climbing gym to teach kids with special needs how to rock climb. We try to schedule the sessions as early as possible since most of our participants are of grammar school age. That means for most volunteers, it is a mad sprint from work to get to the gym on time for the session. Dinner doesn't really fit in this plan. The climbing program is offered free of charge to the families. No payment is ever expected but a thank you is always nice. Tonight, we received one...

Thanksgiving Trot for Hunger 5k

My wife and I ran in the annual Thanksgiving Trot for Hunger 5k race this morning. There were 4,000 participants, which raised funds for So Others Might Eat, and took place along the Potomac river in West Potomac Park. It was freezing when we started, and I stupidly wore shorts, but warmed up by the end of the race. That's my foot there on the right and my wife's on the left, obviously. The orange tag contains the tracking chip that records your time (which in my case was 27:37). I could have gone faster, but my wife made sure I didn't go too crazy. My original plan was to sprint for as long as I could, and push for the fastest time...

May 5, 2008

I received an anniversary bill in the mail today -- "Happy anniversary! You have been our valued customer for 8 years. Thank you." No, thank you Sprint. I tried to remember the day (8 years ago) when I signed my first sprint contract.... hard to believe that for most of my 20s I didn't have a cell phone.... doesn't that seem wierd? I think I had a small plan and HUGE phone for a bit before I joined sprint... but it sure wasn't part of my life like it is now. I remember the long distance bills at my Edgemere home and highlighting who's calls were whos. Then plans such as 1500 anytime minutes entered my life and the rest is...

Richard Dutrow Jr.'s Big Brown

Behind a Derby favorite, tragedy and redemption By Tom Pedulla, USA TODAY LOUISVILLE — "We're live, babe!" That's horse trainer Richard Dutrow Jr.'s stable-speak, his way of telling friends he expects his colt Big Brown to win the 134th Kentucky Derby on Saturday. For Big Brown, undefeated but having raced only three times, the Derby (4 p.m. ET, NBC; post time 6:04) is a chance to validate the hype that has made such an inexperienced colt the favorite among oddsmakers to win the most prestigious event in American horse racing. For Dutrow, 48, the Derby is all that and much more: a potential validation of an unlikely...

scar redux

I was living in Manhattan for a little over four years when I moved to Philadelphia in 2004. Officially I moved there to take advantage of a job opportunity, unofficially NYC had worn on me by then and it was time to go. Emotionally I needed a fresh start in a more forgiving environment with a greater margin for error. Philadelphia turned out to be exactly the answer I was looking for. I had left behind a relationship that had never worked and a lifestyle I was afraid to admit didn't work for me either. Returning to Pennsylvania felt in some ways a defeat but I didn't care anymore. I was happy to have the opportunity to start...

Eight days in the UK Our trip to the Network Q Rally of Great Britain 2001 Words & fotos: rodney wills We had dreamed of flying over to the UK to witness real deal rally action in what we consider the homeland of rally, Great Britain. The Saga of Tinkerbell

A while back when I was convalescing form the Worst Flu Ever I promised a flickr friend I'd relate the Sagas of my three hams. I was so doped up on Nyquil I don't even remember which flickr friend I promised, but I plan to make good on that promise now. The Saga of Tinkerbell -Or- Tinky, and How We Got Her Tinkerbell is our oldest cat who, at my estimation, is at least 17 or 18 years old. She came to my family as a young, but fully grown cat when I was in the seventh grade. My sister rescued her as a stray that found her way to our flute teacher’s house a couple blocks away. Tinkerbell had been living inside a car in the engine area...
