The Kandariya Mahadeva temple built by Vidyadhara is the largest and most ornate of the Western group of Temples at Khajuraho. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it derives its name from kandara or cave and Mahadeva, another name for Shiva. The main spire or shikhara rises 31 m and is said to depict Mount Meru, the holy mountain of Shiva. It is surrounded by 84 miniature spires.
