Ive spent all day watching a documentary on China. Some of the footage from the late Mao Period is hilarious. Millions of Chinese people holding red books in the air jumping up simultaneously saluting their leader Mao. It is always amazing to me how similar communism is to any sort of repression. The "iron law of oligarchy"...it seems we are fated to relent to the power of only a few. is this human nature? I thought of posting this photo because cereal boxes seem very America. Brighly colored boxes as american incentive. As with anything in an a mainstream American market, so many options. The picture above is Mads, who is Danish, a country that isnt quite entirely socialist but has some remnants of communal responsibility . If I was an archeologist ,in the future, the remnants of an American supermarket would be one of the sites I would most want to find.

Probably the most famous symbol of present-day Kashgar is the huge Mao statue on the edge of 'People's Square' right in the middle of the city - it's allegedly the largest statue of Mao anywhere in China.
I got up for a quick pre-breakfast walkabout and this was the view that greeted me right outside the Hotel.
Rather unusually, this was shot with the splendid Canon 85/1.2L - not the most obvious choice of lens for a shot like this, but worked nontheless.

The presence of the state is still strong in China. Although these old posters are now no more than souvenirs, a whole new range of billboards with government propaganda are still positioned all around the capital.
August 18
We were in Toronto for the Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) this weekend and went up to Pacific Mall to grab "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance". Outside there were a couple of ladies holding up this sign. It means "God will destroy China; denounce communism and keep your life".
