Much smaller than I had imagined, the Buddha head engulfed by a fig tree at Wat Mahathat was still an impressive sight nevertheless. The fig tree is said to only be 50 years old so it makes you wonder how long before the head disappears completely.

One of the most sacred sites in Buddhism is the head of a Buddha grown into a fig tree. Knocked off a statue by the Burmese invaders, the fig tree has grown around it and kept it exactly upright, which is considered a miracle by many Buddhists.

Buddha head in Ayuthaya, Thailand

One of Ayuthaya's most photographed sites is in the grounds of Wat Phra Mahathat, home to a Buddha head that has become embedded in twisted tree roots.

whc.unesco.org/en/list/576 - After the sacking of Ayuthaya, much of the city was just left in its ruined state for decades. As the trees grew up around the ruined temples, much of the rubble became intertwined within the roots. This severed head from a Buddha image is perhaps the most famous example.
